This package is a three volume set, which begins with the story of Gilgamesh and ending with the Popol Vuh. Note that some of the stories contained within the union of these three volumes are not full and complete, but rather a sample of the story. It was a necessary source for my world literature class, he was concerned about taking (I’m an avid reader), but reading with our choice of volume 3 of this series, the class was surprisingly interesting and fun. School or pleasure, this set is worth the small investment.

Norton anthologies of literature have been the norm in all genres, and his collection of World Literature is no exception. Your offer of more ambitious goals to cover at least a representative sample of the best and most important literature of the world, from the earliest writings to date. This set contains the first three volumes – half the total – up EC in 1650 the range of materials is truly incredible in terms of time and place. The best way to make clear is the extent to which sections list: the invention of writing and literature (Epic of Gilgamesh of ancient Egypt, the Old Testament), Ancient Greece and the formation of the Western mind, and Poetry Thinking in Ancient China, the heroic age of India, the Empire, to Europe by Roman Christian Classical Age of India, China “interim period, the rise of Islam and Islamic literature, the formation of Western literature, The Age Gold Japanese culture, the mystical poetry of India, Africa: Mali Epic of Son-Jara, the Renaissance in Europe and America and Europe in the New World natives. This is truly amazing selection extends over three thousand pages with dozens of pieces. The nature of anthologies, of course, favors poems and stories, but a surprising number of works is here in full: The Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer, Aeschylus Agamemnon and Eumenides, Oedipus Rex and Antigone Medea by Euripides Sophocles and Aristophanes’ Lysistrata ‘,’ Kalidasa Sakuntala and the Ring of remembrance, Beowulf, Dante’s Inferno, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Everyman, praise the Erasmus of madness, of Lope de Vega Fuente Ovejuna and Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Othello. The collection is worth buying for these alone can be very difficult to separate under pressure to get the anthology costs no less – to quote given numerous shorter works in time and many in the extract. And “especially notable for the inclusion of many Asians – not to mention Native Americans and Africans – works in collections that virtually ignored until recently, while giving a comprehensive overview of European classics.

Norton anthologies are also notable for extensive supplementary material. The work of each author and displays several pages of biography, the initial funding for critical analysis, and other reading suggestions for both texts and criticism. Different also shows similar sections with background information, plus a timeline and map, and there is a general preface. In addition, important notes and annotations, plus an essay on the translation of closure and an index. This helps make the work , all of which are distant in time and many of them at a distance of culture and in other ways, much more accessible. Many readers will appreciate this, especially since the editors are careful to give you what you need to understand is strength without basic interpretations, while those who can not jump. The anthology is designed primarily as a literary text in university courses, but also ideal for general readers who want to know the literary world – not just the texts themselves, but a significant amount of secondary material.
The result will be the central point that the collection is, after all, a primer. The purists may say and specifications of some of its attributes. the literature of the world being so large, it is possible to be anywhere near a complete collection, and you can easily find important or works that are personal favorites excluded. However, there is no denying the massive scope of what is here, like almost everything I had to be dead. The songs can also be frustrating, especially as summaries and notes are spoilers infection but it is clearly best for the job in question to be here, in part, rather than nothing at all. Since Most pieces are translated, some also disagreed with the translations used. The editors wisely chose the more accessible, but some prefer more literary versions, for example, a translation of Gilgamesh is used instead of the more artistic prose verse . In general, however, the options are difficult to fault. Further translations are updated to meet current spelling, punctuation, etc., even English writers as Chaucer and Milton are treated well. The purists do not, but most interested in a collection will thank you.
So, who wants an excellent collection of literature in all aspects of the world can not do better. Separately buy all the sample works here would cost many times the price of the collection, the value is almost unbelievable. Even reading regularly, take at least several months to the end – probably at least better part of a year. More importantly, this is the kind of collection where you can keep for life, it provides years of re-reading and reference. It is hard to imagine a better deal, quantity and diversity of a collection is really amazing. Anyone who loves the three first volume is obviously very excited to continue for the next three anthologies Norton, and others. As for how to buy, who wants half of the whole or the whole series will always be the best two in three volumes, but is less expensive and more convenient. Those who want only one or a few volumes can be purchased individually, but the quality is so high that almost certainly they want anyway, the scenes are really the way forward. Do not disappoint.

This is a great book, offers so many great stories from around the world and all the time! I bought this book for a class, but use it for much more, it’s nice to sit down with this great book, and read poems and tall tales have to offer.

This book discusses various literary works before 1650. Some of the stories and poems are complete, others, like the Iliad skip several chapters. Not bad for someone who is interested in reading the works of this period of time, however I have found to be a bit “dry for my taste.

This textbook is an excellent price compared to other college textbooks (which are 100-300 dollars per book!). The pages are well printed and looks great on the shelf. The pages and cover of the book are very thin, so there are plenty of pages of this book. All I want is that the coverage and manga that are placed around the three books were a bit “stronger / thicker.
