Why Should College Students Read The New Testament In A World Literature Class?

This is for a World Literature assignment where I have to act like the teacher and pick books for students to read.

Well I certainly can’t agree with Aslan that it’s a great read. It’s long, boring, pedantic, the characters are one-dimensional, it contains a good deal of fake history (Jews were never slaves in Egypt, etc), and some chapters are just lists of names. But overall, the Bible is one of the most-quoted sources in modern literature, so some parts are useful to understand other books – just as ‘1984′ and ‘Catch-22′ are useful in that respect (and much better reads). The problem here is reading the bible as literature instead of religion – that’s a distinction many teachers cannnot or are not willing to make.

i think the new testament is a great one
firstly the bible is the best selling and most well known book in the whole world
secondly the new testament is set in the times of the roman empire where ideas and inventions were quick to spread around due to the common language and ease of movement between regions under one government (becoming more like that today too don’t you think?)
thirdly – it gives the origins of the church and Christianity which has been a fundamental part of the western culture for centuries
fourthly – it is a great read!
start them off with one of the gospels outline then follow on with acts as the backbone of the new testament
all the epistles can be linked in with acts with revelation tacked on at the end
